The recent release of Stiller & Meara: Nothing Is Lost reminded the world of the light that Jerry Stiller and his wife, Anne Meara, brought to the world. A husband-and-wife comedic duo, the chemistry between these two, both on and off screen, was clear in all that they did together. While many might remember their work as individuals, with Stiller known best for his roles in sitcoms like The King of Queens and Seinfeld and Meara known for her appearances in Archie Bunker’s Place or Alf, it was together that they shone the brightest. In 1953, Anne Meara stormed out of a theater agent’s office, distraught and in tears after the man made an advance at her. In an effort to lift her spirits, Jerry offered to take her out for a cup of coffee—and the rest was history. On paper, the duo couldn’t be more different. Anne, an Irish-Catholic woman from Long Island, spent much of her time on the stage, honing her acting skills in summer stock theater. Meanwhile, Jerry was a Jewish comedian from the Lower East Side. What they did have in common was their feelings for one another, and by 1954, they tied the knot—and it wasn’t long before they teamed up to form the comedy duo Stiller and Meara.

Around eight years after they got married, the couple began to collaborate professionally. “People would say to Anne, ‘Heh, you’re married to him?’ I thought we could use it,” Jerry recalled to People back in 1977. Throughout the sixties, they brought their act to countless variety shows, even appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show over 30 times. The couple also put their talents together for the Blue Nun Wine radio commercials. Though they had success as a duo, the couple felt it better to go their separate ways when it came to their careers, forging their own paths. 

“I love Anne, but if I had depended on her in my professional life, I would have lost her as a wife. We felt like two guys,” Jerry told People. “I didn’t know where the act ended and our marriage began,” said Anne. Luckily for both of them, their solo endeavors worked out just fine both in terms of success and in terms of their marriage; the couple remained together up until Anne died in 2015. Stiller passed away a few years later in 2020.

Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara welcomed a daughter, Amy Stiller, in 1961, and a son, Ben Stiller, in 1965. Both Amy and Ben have enjoyed careers in the limelight, and credit their parents as being major influences on them. Ben, who spearheaded the latest documentary that highlights his mother and father’s lives and marriage, learned quite a bit about the intricacies of their relationship. 

“There’s so much footage and material and things to show of the good and the bad and the tension and the happy times,” said Ben as reported by CBS. “I felt it was really important to try to have a balance in the film that would relay to the audience what the reality was of their relationship, which was, I think, grounded in love.”
