Lawmakers will consider a 6-cent-per-gallon increase to the gas tax along with bumps to registration fees and the payroll tax to fund transportation needs around the state when they convene for a special session on Aug. 29. Gov. Tina Kotek on July 22 announced she was calling lawmakers back to Salem after proposals to remedy the Oregon Department of Transportation's budget shortfall failed to make it through the 2025 Legislature. She said her previously announced layoffs of nearly 500 Department of Transportation employees starting July 31 would be delayed until Sept. 15. Twelve maintenance stations set to close also will remain open, pending the result of the special session. The special session seemed imminent following the end of the session on June 27, with Kotek telling lawmakers their work on transportation was not finished. "I'm not complaining, but the minute the session ended, I canceled all my plans," Kotek said. The governor said the bill lawmakers will consider "will have the resources for the future to allow us to get back to work, avert the layoffs and get back to serving Oregonians the way we need to serve them." What is in Kotek's bill for the 2025 transportation special session? (责任编辑:) |
