One of the top storylines for the Baltimore Orioles over the last few seasons has been the major influx of prospect talent to the major league roster. However, not every top prospect is destined to pan out.

The Orioles once had high hopes for outfielder Hudson Haskin, who they drafted out of Tulane with their second-round pick in 2020. Haskin debuted at No. 17 on MLB Pipeline's Orioles prospect rankings at the end of the 2021 season, and he peaked at No. 15 in 2023.

However, after he struggled to handle the pitching at the upper levels of the minors, Haskin's stock within the organization seemed to plummet. And last week, the Orioles ultimately decided that the 27-year-old no longer merited a spot on their minor-league depth chart.

According to the transactions log on his official roster page, Haskin was released on Wednesday. He wasn't on the 40-man roster, and he maintains all of his minor-league options and Rule 5 eligibility heading into the new season.

Haskin played at four levels last season as the Orioles moved him around to accommodate other prospects, but he mainly saw action at Double-A and Triple-A. In 57 games, he slashed .184/.290/.270, with two home runs, 21 RBIs, and 51 strikeouts. He also saw far less action on the basepaths, with just four steals after totaling 22 in 101 games the prior year.

It was fairly clear that in 2024, the Orioles had high hopes for Haskin. He got 90 games of run at Triple-A Norfolk after earning a promotion there the previous season. Last year, they'd all but given up on him by the time the season concluded.

While Haskin has a reasonably high draft and top prospect pedigree for someone who just got released, he'll face an uphill climb from this point forward if he still hopes to make a major league debut someday.
