Yahtzee is a classic dice game of chance and choice. It’s part math, part luck and entirely fun. The game traces its roots back to the 1930s with a five-dice game called Yacht, played among upper-class circles and aboard private boats. It wasn’t until 1956 that Yahtzee became a published product, thanks to entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe.

Whether you're using a physical Yahtzee score card or enjoying Yahtzee online, the rules stay the same: roll the best combinations, outscore your opponents and yell "Yahtzee!" like a maniac when you hit five of a kind.

Yahtzee is played in 13 rounds. On each turn, your goal is to roll the best scoring combination and choose one empty category on your score sheet to fill. The player with the highest total score at the end wins. Here is how a Yahtzee turn goes:

First roll: Roll all five dice

Second roll (optional): Keep any dice, reroll the rest

Third roll (optional): Reroll again or stop early

Each category can only be used once, even if you score zero.

The score card is split into two sections:

Upper Section

In the upper section, you try to get as many of each number as you can, from Aces (1s) to Sixes. For each row, you add up the matching dice. If the total of all six rows is 63 or more, you get a 35-point bonus at the end.

Lower Section

In the lower section, you score based on dice patterns instead of specific numbers. Each category has its own rules and point value:

Three of a Kind: Total of all five dice

Four of a Kind: Total of all five dice

Full House (2 + 3): 25 points

Small Straight (4 in a row): 30 points

Large Straight (5 in a row): 40 points

Yahtzee (5 of a kind): 50 points

Chance (any roll): Add all five dice

If you roll another Yahtzee after already scoring 50 in the Yahtzee box, you earn 100 bonus points. Then the Joker rule applies:

If the matching upper-section row is empty (for example Sixes for five sixes) you must fill it.

If that row is already filled, choose any open lower-section box such as Four of a Kind, Full House or Chance, even if it scores zero.

If the Yahtzee box already shows 0, you get no bonus, but you still have to place the roll somewhere.

Try to score well in Fours, Fives and Sixes early to reach the Upper Section bonus

Use Aces (1s) or Twos to dump weak rolls and save better categories for later

Midgame Moves:

Prioritize hard-to-get rolls like straights

Don’t waste good rolls chasing a miracle Yahtzee

Endgame Planning:

Fill the toughest boxes first

Keep track of what is still open and avoid aiming for something already filled
